Freedom | Living In The Shadows

Freedom | Living In The Shadows
Lee Reams

IDENTITY | The meek man is not a human mouse afflicted with a sense of his own inferiority. Rather he may be in his moral life as bold as a lion and as strong as Samson; but he has stopped being fooled about himself. He has accepted God’s estimate of his own life. He knows he is as weak and helpless as God declared him to be, but paradoxically, he knows at the same time that he is in the sight of God of more importance than angels. In himself, nothing; in God, everything. That is his motto. A.W. Tozer Was an 20th American Christian pastor, preacher, author, magazine editor, and spiritual mentor.

DESTINY | Ephesians 1:4-6 New Living Translation (NLT) 4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. 6 So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.

PURPOSE | John 10:10 New Living Translation (NLT) 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

INTRODUCTION | Those words were spoken by Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd. He gave His life for us, His sheep, so that we might experience life abundantly and life eternal. But for too many believers the words of that promise sound empty, and the reality seems far away. Do the words of Jesus’ promise sound empty to you? Do you feel far away from the joy and peace that other Christians seem to experience? Instead of enjoying a productive life of freedom in Jesus Christ, do you seem to be in bondage to fear, anger, or depression? Are you struggling with habits you can’t break, thoughts or inner voices you can’t silence, or sinful behavior you can’t escape? Anderson, Neil T. (2006-12-15). The Bondage Breaker® Study Guide (p. 5). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

TRANSITION | Are you living in the shadows? Dear God, Where are you? How can you watch and not help me? I hurt so bad, and you don’t even care….I love you, but you seem so far away. I can’t hear you or feel you or see you, but I’m supposed to believe you’re here…

Anderson, “Many other Christians I deal with don’t complain about hearing voices as such, but their minds are filled with such confusion that their daily walk with Christ is unfulfilling and unproductive. When they try to pray, they begin thinking about a million other things they should be doing. When they sit down to read the Bible or a good Christian book, they can’t concentrate, or they read for several minutes and suddenly realize that their thoughts have been a million miles away. When they have an opportunity to serve the Lord in some way, they are brought up short by discouraging thoughts of self-doubt: “I’m not a strong Christian”; “I don’t know enough about the Bible”; “I’m still plagued by sinful thoughts”; or “I don’t have many spiritual gifts.” Instead of being victorious, productive, joy-filled Christians, they trudge through life under a cloud, just trying to hang on until Jesus comes. Some of this is certainly because of lack of mental discipline and patterns of the flesh, but it can also reflect deception from the enemy. I have seen thousands of people freed from this kind of mental torment.

1. Demons were active when Christ was on earth, but their activity has subsided today.

2. What the early church called demonic activity we now understand to be mental illness.

3. Some problems are psychological and some are spiritual.

4. Christians aren’t subject to demon activity.

5. Demonic influence is only evident in extreme or violent behavior and gross sin.

6. Freedom from spiritual bondage is the result of a power encounter with demonic forces.

JOHN 8:44 NLT 44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

JOHN 10:10 NLT 44 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

1 JOHN 5:19 NLT 19 We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.

Revelation 12:9 NLT This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.

JOHN 6:48 NLT 48 Yes, I am the bread of life!

JOHN 14:6 NLT 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

JOHN 16:13 NLT 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

ISAIAH 9:6 NLT 6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

2 CORINTHIANS 10:3-5 NLT We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

EPHESIANS 6:10-18 NLT 10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

MATTHEW 28:18 NLT 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.

COLOSSIANS 2:15 NLT 15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

EPHESIANS 1:18-21 NLT 1I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. 19 I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. 21 Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.

EPHESIANS 2:4-7 NLT But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.

JOHN 14:6 NLT Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

JOHN 17:15,17 NLT 15 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. 17 Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.

PHILIPPIANS 4:8 NLT And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

ROMANS 8:38-39 NLT 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 PETER 3:21,22 NLT 21 And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 22 Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority.
